Read the NTF strategy for the future of the fixture list and race programme
The National Trainers Federation (NTF) has published its strategy for the future of the fixture list and race programme (available HERE).
Introducing the strategy, NTF Chief Executive Paul Johnson said: “Racing is in decline, with attendances, betting turnover, runners and foal crops all falling, while inflation adjusted prize-money still lags behind pre-Covid levels. Urgent action is needed if we are to protect our sport for future generations.”
“There are some encouraging projects on-going, such as projects Pace and Beacon, which aim to attract significant international investment and provide customer insight to help the sport develop a longer-term strategy for growth.”
“However, the strategy published today focusses specifically on the fixture list and race programme itself, which is critical in defining the shape of the horse population in years to come. Our aim is to deliver a clearly defined and meritocratic race programme, which maximises efficiency, reduces racings cost base and carbon footprint, while also providing an enhanced offering to consumers.”
“There are nine recommendations outlined in the document that will help drive the change needed, but underlying all of them is the requirement for organisations within racing to work together to deliver them. The strategy was circulated at our AGM on Monday to a panel of industry leaders, and I am encouraged that the key takeaway from the meeting was that, while not discussing the details of the proposal in depth, there is a genuine willingness from all parties to work together moving forward.”
